You Have the Power to Change a Life Right Here in Cuyahoga County
In the dynamic community of Cuyahoga County, there are countless opportunities to make a difference. But few offer the profound and lasting impact of becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cleveland, we believe in the incredible potential within every young person, and we’re dedicated to igniting that power through the simple yet transformative act of mentorship.
For youth aged 8 to 17 – often navigating the critical years of grades 3 through 12 – having a consistent, positive role model can be life-changing. Our “Bigs,” as we affectionately call our volunteer mentors, step into the lives of their “Littles” to offer guidance, friendship, and a listening ear. It’s not about grand gestures or expensive outings; it’s about the everyday moments that build trust and connection.
Think about it: a trip to the local library, a walk in our beautiful Metroparks, a friendly game of checkers, or even just sharing an ice cream cone. These are the free or low-cost activities that form the foundation of a Big and Little’s relationship. And through these shared experiences, something remarkable happens.

The Ripple Effect of Mentorship: Real Impact, Real Results
The impact of a Big Brother or Big Sister extends far beyond the time spent together. Studies show that youth with mentors are:
20% more likely to enroll in college, opening doors to brighter futures.
Poised to earn 15% more over their lifetime, contributing to economic well-being.
Closing two-thirds of the economic gap, fostering greater equity in our community.
These aren't just statistics; they represent the real lives of young people who are gaining confidence, developing essential life skills, and making positive choices with the support of their Big.
Become a Big: It Takes Little to Be Big
You might be thinking, "I'm not perfect. Do I have what it takes to be a mentor?" The answer is a resounding yes! At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cleveland, we’re not looking for superheroes; we’re looking for individuals who are willing to show up as themselves and be present in a young person's life.
We welcome mentors from all walks of life. Whether you’re in your late 20s or early 30s, perhaps before starting a family, or if your children have grown and left the nest, offering you a new opportunity to connect and give back – your unique experiences, friendship and encouragement are invaluable.
The Commitment: Meaningful, Manageable, and Fun!
We ask our Bigs to commit to meeting with their Little just two times per month (for a total of 4-6 hours) for at least 12 months. These meetings are scheduled at times that are convenient for both you and the child's family, allowing you to build a genuine friendship while fitting it into your life. And the best part? You get to explore all the wonderful things our Cuyahoga County community has to offer together!
If you’d like to get involved, but aren’t sure a monthly commitment is for you, consider signing up to be a Big for a Day and get matched for a couple hours with a child awaiting a permanent mentor, 1-1 or in a small group for a fun activity.
Volunteers report opportunities to meet new people, feel a stronger connection to their community, and develop leadership skills. Research also suggests that volunteering can contribute to increased happiness and reduced stress levels.
More Than Just Volunteering: It's a Mutually Rewarding Experience
Becoming a Big is an investment, not just in a young person's future, but in your own well-being. As a Big Brother or Big Sister, you can:
Meet new people and expand your social circle.
Feel more connected to your community in a deeply meaningful way.
Grow and sharpen your leadership qualities through your mentoring relationship.
Experience genuine happiness! Research even suggests a significantly lower risk of depression among volunteers.
Make valuable professional connections through our network and events.
Act as a potent stress buster, with studies showing a reduction in cortisol levels for active volunteers.
Ultimately, as a Big, you have the profound opportunity to make a tangible difference in a child’s life and directly contribute to our organizational goal of matching the over 100 children right here in Cuyahoga County who are currently waiting for their permanent Big.
